They were ALL going to die

"They got better, but they weren’t the same people. Alyssa's hair fell out. She slowly lost her ability to speak the English language. She started babbling in Arabic. My boy had retreated like a turtle into a shell. He was an absolute basket case. He would watch TV, play video games, or stay on the computer. Yenna could not teach because she could not sleep. She would wake up screaming in the middle of the night, ranting about how they had poisoned the town and they were all going to die. There was nothing I could do for any of them. I had to keep my job. I would leave them all day together in their very different states of hysteria. After months of this, I had to send the children to a psychiatric ward to try and salvage what had become of my wife. I took my vacation and stayed home with her for two weeks. She had spun a tale of their six days away; she had convinced herself that she and the children had been forced to plant poisoned crops all over the town and they would grow and be distributed to everyone in the town. I gave her story no credence; I thought she was delirious. She started sleepwalking; I would find her standing in the driveway, sometimes in her underwear, with her eyes rolled up in her head. Once, I found her chopping vegetables in the kitchen with her eyes closed. She was humming as she sliced away at her own fingers.”
